Centurion

from Lyrics by Thursday's Child

lyrics

Centurion
Ken Punshon & Chris Pyam (2013)

Legions three, we built this wall
Stretched across the land
And now as freezing snowflakes fall
To guard it here we stand

Always watching to the North
Looking for the tribes
Waiting lest they sally forth
With their warlike cries

In the foggy half-light the tribesmen appear
From behind an earthen wall
The battle is furious, the blood running free
Everywhere bodies are sprawled

The Brigantes are coming
From over the hill
They're searching for Romans,
Roman centurions to kill

For a while did Antonine, Hold another wall
For ten long years it marked the line, Then backwards we did fall

The hills are bare, the outlook bleak, In this frozen realm
And all the while the natives seek, Rome to overwhelm

The Irish and Saxons, the Picts and the Gaels
Harass on every side
We drive them back, time and again
But they will not be denied

And when our defences
At last they gave way
It ended the eagle
At the end of the Roman day

Standing here upon the hill, Feeling cold winds blow
Something else our spirit chills, Makes our blood to slow

Ghosts still walk these ramparts tall, In the dead of night
Echoes of the bugle's call, Echoes of the fights

about

Thursday's Child UK

Thursday's Child was born on a Monday (August Bank Holiday 2009)!

Chris Pyam and Ken Punshon got together to try out a couple of ideas for songs. That afternoon they created about eight songs; since then over 100 more have emerged, with a few more 'bubbling away'.

Heather Dunn joined us in Nov 13 to contribute additional harmonies during the creation of our third album (Carry My Thoughts).
