Since pagan days on May the first, those with German roots
Joyfully did the summer greet and with a pole salute
Made from acer maple, from hawthorn, or from birch
The symbolism's very clear, no need for much research

The Commonwealth did stop the fun for nearly two decades
But soon a restoration came of Maypoles and parades
Festooned with flowers, coloured painted, draped in greenery
The girls' straw bands, their posies and ribboned hair you'd see

Girls would wash their faces clean in early morning dew
And houses decked with flowers 'fore dawn good luck would accrue
In the North on Garland Day, Goslings would be tricked
And maidens dream of their true love if seven flowers they'd picked

Padstow's had the 'Obby 'Oss from (the) 14th century
Where Mr. Rickard's still caroused by mayers plentifully
With bluebells and forget-me-nots, and cowslips all ablaze

Chris Pyam and Ken Punshon got together to try out a couple of ideas for songs. That afternoon they created about eight songs; since then over 100 more have emerged, with a few more 'bubbling away'.
